Dental crowns and bridges are tried-and-tested restorations for damaged or missing teeth. A crown caps and protects a weakened tooth, while a bridge fills a gap left by one or more missing teeth. At Worthing Dental Practice, we offer both NHS and private crowns and bridges using quality materials for natural-looking, long-lasting results.
Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a cap that fits over the entire visible part of a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. You may need a crown to protect a tooth weakened by large decay or a fracture, to restore a broken or severely worn tooth, to cover a tooth after root canal treatment, to support a dental bridge, or to improve the appearance of a discoloured or misshapen tooth. Crowns can be made from various materials including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or porcelain fused to metal. We will recommend the best material for your specific situation.
The Crown Procedure
Getting a crown usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, we prepare the tooth by removing a thin layer of the outer surface to make room for the crown. We take detailed impressions and fit a temporary crown to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is made by a dental laboratory. At the second visit, we remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent one in place, checking the fit and bite carefully.
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge literally bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) held in place by crowns on the teeth either side of the gap (abutment teeth). Like crowns, bridges can be made from various materials including porcelain, ceramic, and metal. A bridge restores your ability to chew and speak properly, prevents remaining teeth from shifting, and maintains the shape of your face.
How Long Do Crowns and Bridges Last
With good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, crowns and bridges typically last 10 to 15 years and often longer. Their longevity depends on the material used, the forces they are subjected to (grinding and clenching can shorten their lifespan), and how well you maintain your oral health. Avoiding very hard or sticky foods and wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth can help extend their life.
