Dental X-Rays in Worthing

Dental x-rays are an essential diagnostic tool that allow us to see problems that are not visible to the naked eye. At Worthing Dental Practice, we use modern digital radiography which produces high-quality images with significantly lower radiation doses than traditional film x-rays.

Why Dental X-Rays Are Important

A visual examination alone cannot detect everything. X-rays reveal decay between teeth, infections at the root of a tooth, bone loss from gum disease, abscesses, cysts, and the position of unerupted teeth. Catching these problems early often means simpler, less invasive, and less costly treatment. Without x-rays, some conditions could go undetected until they cause significant pain or damage.

Types of X-Rays We Use

We use several types of dental x-rays depending on what we need to see. Bitewing x-rays show the upper and lower back teeth and are excellent for detecting decay between teeth. Periapical x-rays show the entire tooth from crown to root and the surrounding bone - these are useful when investigating toothache or planning root canal treatment. We may also use panoramic x-rays (OPG) which capture the entire mouth in a single image, useful for assessing wisdom teeth, jaw problems, and planning implant treatment.

Safety and Radiation

We understand that some patients are concerned about radiation from dental x-rays. The good news is that modern digital x-rays use very low radiation doses - a set of bitewing x-rays exposes you to roughly the same amount of radiation as a few hours of natural background radiation from the environment. We always follow the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) and only take x-rays when there is a clear clinical benefit. We use lead aprons for additional protection when appropriate.

How Often You Need X-Rays

The frequency of dental x-rays depends on your individual circumstances. New patients usually need a full set of x-rays so we can establish a baseline of your oral health. After that, routine bitewings are typically taken every 12 to 24 months for adults, though your dentist may recommend them more or less often based on your risk factors.
